Veronica is a 2017 Spanish supernatural horror film directed by Paco Plaza and starring Sandra Escacena. It is loosely based on the true story of Estefanía Gutiérrez Lázaro, a teenage girl who died mysteriously after using an Ouija board.
The film follows Verónica, a 15-year-old girl who lives with her mother and three younger siblings in a working-class neighborhood in Madrid. On the day of a solar eclipse, Verónica and her friends use an Ouija board to contact the spirit of her dead father. However, the session goes wrong and Verónica begins to experience strange and terrifying events. She sees apparitions, hears voices, and is even possessed by a demon.
Verónica is a slow-burning but compelling horror film that builds suspense and dread in a masterful way. The film is beautifully shot and features some truly terrifying moments. Sandra Escacena gives a breakout performance as Verónica, and the supporting cast is also excellent.
Veronica is not for the faint of heart, but it is a well-made and suspenseful horror film that will leave a lasting impression.
